Is clay considered acidic type of soil and good for camellia?

Clay can be acidic but camellias, just like azaleas, like an acid soil with a lot of organic matter. So if you are planning on planting either be sure your beds have lots of amendments like peat, finely ground pine mulch, etc.

If you are referring to southern red clay, it is very acidic.
Reply:Southern clay is acid and high in organic matter, best way to neutralize if needed is spread calcium over soil.
Reply:Though many clays may be acidic, soil texture (whether your soil is a sand silt or clay) does not determine pH. You need to get a soil pH test kit. You can usually find these at most nurseries and garden centers or you could simply ask the people working there if they know if the local soils are acidic. They should know or at least be able to give you somewhat of an idea.

Also the ideal soil pH for camellias is between 6 and 6.5, in other words slightly acidic.

Hope that helps.
Reply:Desert clay is very alkaline (basic). Camellias don't grow here naturally (AZ).
