I am trying to determine if I can grow the green tea planet "Camellia sinensis" in Houston. Any Thoughts?

Camellia sinensis--

Culture: Tea plants need plenty of moisture. They do best in rather humid climates.

Light: Seedlings and young tea plants should be shaded; mature plants produce best in full sun.

Moisture: Tea plants need plenty of moisture. They do best in rather humid climates.

Hardiness: USDA Zones 9 - 11. Tea plants do best in a cool, but frost-free climate. They can, however, withstand light freezes when dormant.

Propagation: Tea plants are propagated by rooting semiripe cuttings, and by budding, grafting, and air layering. Teas are sometimes grown from seed as well.

Houston is in Zone 9a so Camelia sinensis should do ok as long as you protect it from frost.

I think it should be okay. Do you know which growing zone you're in? I'm guessing 8 or 9.

It grows in loose, deep, acid soil, at high altitude, with summer and autumn rain, in a little heat and little wind. It matures in three to five years At low altitude the growth of the tea bush is so rapid in the growing seasons that they need picking every few days to ensure that only the best tips are plucked. The best tips are those young and tender. Best of luck
