Can I feed camellias with ericasous plant food?

Looking at the garden now everything looks as tho' it needs a little help. Is Ericasous compost or plant food suitable for camellias?

Ericaceaous plants love acid. Camelias like acid. Check your soil pH and if it's over 6.0, it will do your camelias a lot of good.





If the soil pH is under 5.5, use caution. Further acidification might be a problem.
Reply:Avoid placing potted camellias against an east facing wall that catches the early morning sun, as in this position the buds are more prone to damage. It's not the cold temperatures that do the damage, but the rapid change in temperature as early morning sun quickly warms the buds after severe overnight frosts. To keep the leaves dark green and the plant vigorous enough to form new buds remember to feed this and any other ericaceous plants every couple of weeks from March until July with Miracle-Gro Ericaceous Plant Food.


Ericaceous compost is also suitable for camellias.

Reply:Yes, ericaceous (acidic) plant food is ideal for Camellias, as they love acidic soil conditions. Also, use ericaceous compost for repotting a camellia, if grown in tubs etc.

Reply:try a trick my grandfather taught me get a bucket and put your old tea bags in it let it fill with rain water and pour the liquid at base of plant as a treat approx every 3 months hope that helps you

You may find though that your Camellia is very happy where it is at present and it may only need a general fertiliser, such as Growmore.





Most ericaceous plants only suffer when gardeners attempt to grow them in alkaline soils. This will cause the iron to be locked in by the calcium in the soil. The result will be lime green sickly looking leaves instead of deep green glossy leaves. If your Camellia has sick looking light green leaves then you should feed it with an iron feed such as sequestered iron. This can either be done with granules that sprinkle on the soil or a solution that you water on.





All camellias will benefit from a mulch of "lime free" leaf mulch or composted bark around the base and a spring feed. If it's been in a pot for a few years and it looking tired, then you can knock it out of the pot, knock off some of the soil and re-pot with ericaceous compost.
